This Saturday, April 15, advocates across the country will march on Washington, D.C. and in 180 cities to demand transparency in government and fairness in our tax code. I wanted to let you know about marches happening in Indiana.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and the United for Homes (UFH) campaign believe that the federal tax code will not be truly fair until we reform the mortgage interest deduction (MID), and that is why we have signed on as national partners of the National Tax March. A growing list of national partners includes MoveOn.org, Indivisible, Our Revolution, the American Federation of Teachers, Americans for Tax Fairness, Center for Popular Democracy Action, Credo, the Coalition for Human Needs, Color of Change, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the National Women's Law Center, Working Families, and many others.

The MID is a $70 billion a year tax write-off that overwhelmingly and disproportionately benefits America's wealthiest households; NLIHC and United for Homes call on Congress to reform MID so that it better serves low and moderate income homeowners and to $241 billion that would be saved into providing affordable rental homes to people with the greatest needs.

The Tax March takes place just as Congress and the administration turn their attention to comprehensive tax reform. As tax reform develops, MID will be on the table. It is up to us to demand a fair tax system that works for everyone, especially those with the lowest incomes.
