Discussion of Need to Update MCCSC School Districts

Sunday, September 3, 2017 - 4:00pm

WHERE: Monroe County Public Library, Room 1C

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 3, 4 p.m.

The boundaries for current school board seats have not changed since 1996.  The status quo is outdated, disproportionate, and interferes with the integrity of the election process.
While all voters in Monroe County vote for all candidates, school board candidates must live in a district that has an open seat in an election year.  Yet, with population shifts within the county over the last 21 years, school board seats now draw candidates from highly unequal populations, with the largest districts (>22,000) more than double the size in population than the smallest (>10,000). In the last several election cycles, at least one seat has run uncontested. The attached flyer has a chart with more details.
Under Indiana state law, plans for changes in school board governance can be initiated in two ways: a majority vote of current school board members, or a petition from a least 10 percent of current voters in the school corporation. We believe a school board vote is the more viable option. Then, a committee will review options for modifying the governance plan. From start to finish, the procedural steps can take up to 12 months.
Please join us to launch this effort!  As the Community Committee for Educational Equity, we are working to update the school board seats to correct this disparity. Our goal is to prompt school board members to vote to initiate the process at the September 26  school board meeting.
Who is the Community Committee for Educational Equity?  We are an informal coalition of parents, educators, and residents of Monroe County seeking to maintain a robust public school system that provides a high-quality education with breadth and depth of opportunity to all students, regardless of race or family income. More information:
